Sharon Uwanyuze

Education: B.S Materials Engineering, University of Alabama at Birmingham, 2018

Bio: Prior to joining this group in 2021, Sharon performed research at the University of Connecticut on advanced ceramic materials for investment casting. She is fascinated by the interconnectedness of the structure-processing-properties and performance of materials, and she seeks to learn and apply her findings to various fields. For example, Sharon worked as an R&D Intern at Reno Refractories Inc, a Corrosion Intern at Oak Ridge National Lab, and is currently a General Electric (GE) fellow.

Current Research: Understanding the role of alloying elements in high-temperature reactions between ceramic oxide molds and titanium alloys during processing.

Outside the Lab: Sharon serves as the Intellectual Merit Chair for the graduate chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), one of whose main roles is mentoring undergraduate students seeking to pursue higher education in engineering. Sharon also serves as the Director of His Branches Adventurer Club (a local church-based program for children in grades 1-4 to play, learn and improve their social skills).
